The delivery truck needs roughly the same straight-line clearance for a 20 yard as it does for a 15 — the extra length is in the box, not the truck's swing radius. Where the 20 yard actually needs more room is the pad itself: 22 feet of driveway or yard space, plus a little clearance on the sides for the driver to angle it into place. Why it's the most popular size we deliver

Most residential jobs land right in the range a 20 yard is built for. A whole-house cleanout — furniture, boxes, old carpet, garage contents, all of it at once — usually needs more room than a 15 yard offers but doesn't come close to filling a 30. Same with a larger remodel that touches more than one room, or a flooring job pulling old material out of a full main level. The 20 yard covers that middle ground without you having to guess whether you'll run out of space halfway through the job.

It's also the size we hear back about the least in terms of buyer's remorse. Homeowners who order a 15 for a bigger job sometimes call back needing a swap or a second container; homeowners who order a 30 for a job a 20 would have handled are paying for space and tonnage they never use. When you're not sure which way to round, a 20 yard is usually the safer default, and it's why we default to recommending it when a caller isn't certain.

Roof tear-offs and Erie's lake-effect winters

When a 20 yard is the wrong size

A 20 yard isn't the right call for every job, and we'd rather tell you that on the phone than let you overpay or run short. If you're clearing a single room, a small bathroom gut, or just some yard debris and a few pieces of furniture, a 15 yard dumpster is usually plenty and costs less. It also fits tighter driveways more easily since it's a shorter box.

On the other end, a major renovation, new-build construction debris, a full demolition, or an estate cleanout with heavy furniture and appliances throughout the whole house tends to outgrow a 20 yard fast. For those, a 30 yard dumpster gives you the same footprint with more height and a bigger tonnage allowance, so you're not stuck ordering a second container mid-job.
