The 40 yard is the largest dumpster we run out of our Cranberry St yard, and it's a different animal than the 30 yard below it. It's the same 22-by-8-foot footprint on the ground, but the walls go up to 8 feet instead of 6, which is where all that extra capacity comes from — roughly 12 pickup loads worth of room. That makes it the right call for commercial fit-out debris, big teardown jobs, and roofing tear-offs at scale where the volume of material is the real problem, not the weight.
That last part matters more than most people expect. A container this size can hold a lot of drywall, framing, cabinetry, ceiling tile and packaging — but it still only carries 5 to 6 tons before you're into overage territory, so it's not the box you want for concrete, dirt, brick or shingles by the ton. The 40 yard shares its ground footprint with our 30 yard — 22 feet long by 8 feet wide — but stands 8 feet tall instead of 6, which is why it holds noticeably more without taking up more pavement. That extra height is also why it needs the most clearance of anything we deliver: more overhead room for the delivery truck's cable and hoist arm to lift and set it down, more room to walk material up and over the walls without a ladder fight, and a firm, level surface to sit on since a full 40 yard is the heaviest loaded container we pick up.

Because the footprint is identical to the 30 yard, a spot that fits one will physically fit the other — the real question is overhead clearance for the truck and whether the site can handle the weight of a fully loaded box sitting on it. We size that up over the phone before we ever bring one out.

What these jobs have in common is volume of bulky, relatively light material — drywall, framing lumber, cabinetry, ceiling tile, insulation, packaging, old fixtures — where you'd otherwise be swapping out a smaller container two or three times mid-job. Why weight, not volume, is the limiting factor at this size
Here's the thing people miss about the 40 yard: it's built for volume, not for weight. The tonnage allowance only goes up about a ton over the 30 yard — 5 to 6 tons versus 4 to 5 — even though the box holds a lot more material. That works fine for bulky, light debris, but if you fill even a third of a 40 yard with concrete, dirt, brick or roofing tile, you can hit the weight limit long before the container looks full, and you're paying overage on tonnage you never needed the extra room for.

When a 40 yard is the wrong size
If most of what you're clearing out is dense material — concrete, brick, dirt, roofing tile, plaster — a 40 yard is oversized for the job and will hit its weight limit fast; a 10 or 15 yard sized for heavy material, or our dedicated concrete and heavy debris service, is usually the better and cheaper fit.
Residential jobs also rarely call for this size. A whole-house cleanout or major remodel is typically well handled by our 30 yard, and most single-family renovations don't generate enough bulky debris to justify the largest box we own. Is a 40 yard dumpster too big for a residential job in Erie?
Usually, yes. Most home renovations, cleanouts and remodels are well handled by our 30 yard or smaller, and a 40 yard often won't fit comfortably on a typical residential driveway anyway given the clearance it needs. We'll steer you to the right size when you call.
Can I put concrete or roofing tile in a 40 yard dumpster?
You can, but it's usually not the cost-effective choice. The 40 yard's weight allowance is only about a ton more than the 30 yard, so heavy dense material hits the tonnage limit fast and you end up paying overage on a container that still looks half empty. For concrete, brick or tile in real quantity, a smaller box sized for weight is typically cheaper.
How much space do I need to have a 40 yard delivered?
The footprint is 22 by 8 feet, same as our 30 yard, but because it's taller you need more overhead clearance for the delivery truck's hoist arm and more room to safely load material over the walls.
